Ribbon Conveyor Flighting

10/20/2007 3:27 PM

I need to fabricate or purchase ribbon conveyor flighting. Cross section of the ribbon is 3.5" x 5". OD is 18". ID is 8". Pitch is 18.5". Material is mild steel. Any ideas?

I have purchased a number of screw conveyors (and their components) from Marten Sprocket and Gear Inc. They apparently have the ability to form custom screw flighting because I have purchased non-standard items from them. I am not pushing this company though. I suspect any company that makes screw flighting for screw conveyors has the ability to form this stuff. I suspect it takes somewhat specialised forming/rolling equipment. If I understand your call out correctly the ribbon is very thick. I did once have a local machine shop (who's owner I know well) form a large diameter ribbon by heating and beating it over a pipe of correct radius. Obviously this is not as accurate as doing it with rolling dies but if your application doesn't require this kind or accuracy (or beauty) this method can work. An industry that forms large ribbons are the people that make ribbon blenders.

Thanks for the help Dave. I will follow up on your suggestion. Indeed our ribbon is very thick, it pulls out the spoils from a tunneling machine.
