Sourcing High Lithium Aluminium

10/09/2019 5:09 AM

I'm trying to find a supplier for a small amount of aluminium with around 2% lithium content, AL2099 or similar. I'm having no luck with suppliers in the UK only finding large round or rectangular bar stock.

I need to make a neutron discriminator target to test a neutron camera. The target would consist of increasingly thick layers of lithium aluminium interspersed with layers of acrylic. This would be placed in a neutron beam & the camera would see how thin a layer it could detect.

I'm thinking that, if I could get, say, 0.5mm sheet I could use layers of that to make thicker pieces.

Can anyone suggest a source?

Those are the people I was talking to but their smallest stock is 1" plate or round bar & 100 x 190mm flat. I've asked Goodfellows for a quote, I know they will be mega expensive but it might be my only hope.

I would think that airplane construction facilities might have a scrap pile that might be accessible with the right approach...Just need a customer list from a supplier...⇑

Some suppliers sell sample packs...

If you can identify the alloy somehow, you could try a scrap metal dealer...

I'll try that if I can think of a possible source.
