Confused Regarding Secure USB Memory Creating Series of Empty Files in Linux Mint (Inodes?)

10/09/2019 8:43 AM

I use an ironkey usb encrypted memory stick in my linux mint laptop. The two have never really played along together very well. when go through a cycle of using the stick ...plug it in ...access it.. unplug it ....it leaves behind an empty file in the /media directory and calls it Ironkey1 and then next use cycle, I get Ironkey2. This keeps going on upto Ironkey16 at the moment. All files are empty and they get in the way of my little scrip that I use to unlock the ironkey which just wants to see it called Ironkey

I am not all that linux savvy and would be thankful if anyone knows why it makes all these empty file and if I can stop it. Thanks for reading. David

I don't use Linux much, but with any operating system the USB needs to be turned off before unplugging it. Look for an icon that lets you make it ready to unplug. The USB files themselves may be corrupted if you don't do this.

Yes, I think that's it. I thought I had tried that, but I think I overlooked something when I tried before. Thanks.

  1. From the Activities overview, open Files.
  2. Locate the device in the sidebar. It should have a small eject icon next to the name. Click the eject icon to safely remove or eject the device. Alternately, you can right-click the name of the device in the sidebar and select Eject.

Thanks for taking time to answer, SolarEagle, and I think that's the answer. Sometimes the right answer eludes me because I am off looking with care under some other metaphorical rock.
