Toshiba Elevator and Building Systems Corp., plans to debut elevators using maglev technology in 2008. Maglev levitation, "a technology capable of suspending objects in midair through combination of magnetic attraction and repulsion", is most commonly associated with high-speed trains. According to Toshiba, the elevators, which will use "magnets in place of wheels and guide rails to travel up and down" should be faster and quieter than conventional lifts.
