Remote Start on a motorcycle

10/24/2007 3:22 PM

Hello out there, I just joined the forum, I'm seeking advice on a remote start/alarm setup on my motorcycle.

I need to take a instant signal of +12v that lasts .7 seconds, and delay it for 2 seconds, and then output for 1.5 seconds. (.7 secs is not long enough to start the bike when cold, and the delay is to allow the fuel injection to calibrate on startup).

My friend has come up with a possible solution to delay it, using the LM555 utilizing a POT that ranges from 1Mohm to 10Mohm, and a CAP that is 10uF. That SHOULD take care of the delay, but I have no clue where to start converting a .7secs signal to 1.5secs..

Anyone have a possible easier solution to incorporate the 2?

Without wishing to discourage you from using 555 timers, it may ultimately prove simpler to use a small microcontroller such as a PIC. There is a cute little 8-pin version that you could use.

While there is a bit more overhead involved in learning how to program the little beetle, the payoff is that you will be easily able to tweak its performance with a few keystrokes.

a pre made choice

or there is the old analog solution caps & resistors, relay logic still works!

Ok, going to give a dual LM555 (16 pin lm556) a try, 1/2 of it for delay, and 1/2 of it for lengthening the signal.. picked up all the parts at radio shack today for a few cents under $20. Now i only have to package it up..

You have some good answers from CR4.

But do not forget to add a neutral safety switch that only allows the starting provided the bike is in neutral. Not adding this is really dangerous for all concerned.....

A bike warms up better when ridden, why go to all this trouble?

now thats funny, posting a link to the 555 on th forum. As a biker for many yrs(69) why now just get on it and ride, I never let it alone while running. Plus what if ya forget to take it out of gear one night. Must be a rice burner thing

Yes, but after they perfect the start, then they can add servo controllers and radio gear for a riderless 'rocket' waahoo!

yeah, the bike has a sidestand switch, as well as a clutch switch, as well as a neutral safety switch built in, so if its in gear, it won't crank.

And as far as why i'm doing the remote start, why leave a feature/wire unconnected, i assumed people here would surely understand .

and to all the people that ask why warm it up? if the motor sits long enough for all the oil to drain to the oilpan, when you start it, the head has no oil in it.. obviously it has a slight coating, but, it being a brand new bike, i don't flog on the engine until its completely warmed up, and it has allowed the oil to circulate. plus it gives me time to smoke a cigarette before putting my helmet on

Then why a "REMOTE" start with all that time in hand while coating your lungs?

It is only something more to go wrong!!!

The main reason for a remote start is so the heater will warm the interior of a car(as well as the engine warming up). Personal comfort (heat that is) is not an issue with a motorcycle.

Being present while the motorcycle is warming up affords you the opportunity to do a safety check of lights, tire pressure (by sight), oil leaks, chain or belt tightness/condition, etc. all while you choose to have that cigarette. You even have time to wipe it down a bit.

once again, i fallback on my "why not use it, if its there" response.. i'm not the type of person that would pay for something, then not use all the features.. i take time at the end of each ride to make sure its ready for the next, as well as perform periodic maintenance, so i'm not really worried about looking it over completely (thats not to say i don't ever look it over before a ride).. the main reason "I" want to use it, is to make sure the bike is up to recommended operating temperature before i even begin to run the high rpms that these things are capable of..

warming up a motor is essential to long motor life.

Not running it up to the high RPM's those things are capable of is even more so.

lugging an engine will do more damage to an engine than over-reving it..

but anyways, this is not a motorcycle forum, i just want to get a timer setup

i agree with JAGUAR , although it seems like a great idea i'd always want to be there when its running...if its a gixer GSX ? like your mate says'told you youd get an answer... blah blah' then it may not be there when you arrive to get on your nicely warmed bike...make a habit of it and someone will see it and may take advantage of that fact and it will DISAPPEAR like so many of them do..... those jap kits for remote/alarm are a good idea for a car for the reasons stated previously by others ...warm interior /defrosted screen etc...do you ride a gixer in the frost n' ice? i certainly wouldnt...i agree with you about setting off with a warm engine so you can give it some....but i would think carefully and re-examine your logic.....it just isnt worth it and i cant see them being an essential retrofit bit of gear...more a gimmick than anything else....im a biker too (supermoto) and wouldnt leave mine running unattended...too many fruitloops in the world amigo...best of luck anyway...

What if a combination of radio, telephones and whatever, turned the engine on in the middle of the night or when nobody is at home.....?

Digital stuff can do some funny things occasionally, one time would be enough!!
