very simply:

L * W * H = cubic,

so:

9" = .75' therefore:

.75 * .75 * 12 = 6.75 cubic feet

6.75 cu ft / 27 (number of cubic feet in a cubic yard) = .25 cubic yard....

or just a bit more than 3 - 80 lb bags of quickrete (better buy 4)

Dont you need to adjust for the 5.5% consolidation, and increase the amount by 5.5%?

This could be a con as someone stated but the dimensions could be used for a tie down weight. Also the calculations noted are true but the number of 80 # bags is off. Typically 3 - 80 # bags yeilds 2 cf. Therefore, you would need a little over 10 bags.

"the required amount of concrete needed in cubic yards for a column 9" x 9" x 12' with a 5.5% consolidation. please help me out here!!!!!"

Is it the column or the hole that is 9" x 9" x 12 ft.? As stated it is the column. 1/4 yd. of concrete would be woefully inadequate for a column of that size.

If it is the pit or hole that is 9" x 9" x 12 ft. the hole is much deeper than necessary.

Do not forget the re-bar for that 12 foot column.

I went to ConcreteNework.com and entered your dimensions into their concrete volume calculator and it also spit out .25 cu. yds. I also felt that this amount seemed insufficient, but the numbers do not lie.

1/4 cubic yards is of no consequence IF you are comparing it to Hoover Dam.

1/4 cu.yd. or 27/4 = 6.75 cu. ft. or bags of sack-crete. Mixing that much concrete will convince you that it should be more than enough by the time you mix it and fill the hole.

The OP Ms.Monah has yet to clarify the issue as to exactly what the dimensions given are intended to mean. If it is the beam to be set in concrete (12 ft. deep in ground) or the actual hole in the ground, which is far too deep to set any small rod or support of an practical use.

CALLING Ms.Monah WHERE ARE YOU?

This sounds odd. If it's a hole, I can't dig it. If it's a formed column, it's awfully slender.

TVP45 Me think-est Ms.Monah is pulling our leg(s).

Hasn't shown the common courtesy of returning to post a clarification of her 'problem'.

Even an 8th grader should be able to do such a simple calculation, conversions and all! Stirling Stan

Hey Stirling, Let me help Ms. Monah out because of the word please

Volume of concrete = 9 x 9 x 12 x 12 = 11664 cubic inchs

Convert to cubic yards;46656 cubic inchs = 1 cubic yards

Therfore; 11664 cubic inchs equal 0.25 cubic yards

Add 40% concrete shrinkage and waste; 0.25 x 1.40

Add 5.5% consolidation(possible vibration); 0.25 x (1.40 + 0.55) = 0.4875 cubic yards.

Grego: Did you read post #2 above?

All of us came up with 1/4 yd less the adjustments for the niceties!

Now can you explain what she really was asking for. The hole size or the column size and why 12 ft. deep, (if you can).
