Regulated Power Supply

01/16/2020 2:09 AM

Hello Guys!

I had a question and I was wondering can a regulated power supply can be put on to a rectoformer with rating of 8KA and 24V DC???

Is that a very weak and non-committing version of "yes"?

I'm certain some power supplies will survive and that some will work quite well. I'm equally certain some power supplies won't survive and that some of these will die in a spectacular fashion.

So the question shouldn't be can this be done. The question is should this be done to meet some unstated goal.

Well yes, full voltage or current regulation is possible but complicated at potential current levels this high, simple requlation by just adding large capacitors to smooth out the diode rectified AC output of the rectoformer is relatively straight forward and inexpensive.

What is the application, from your previous posts I thought normally you wouldn't need to smooth the waveform of a rectoformer powering a DC induction furnace.

Thank you for replying !

Could u check my previous post as i have updated new data regarding the furnace and yes i asked this question with related to previous post.

I was wondering if i can regulate the power supply going towards the furnace from the rectoformer.

IF your current power supply has that motor-driven three-phase autotransformer and its associated circuitry, then at least in one sense, you already have a regulated power supply, with a rather slow response time.

Rectiformers (rectifier transformers) are made controllable by replacing the diodes with thyristors which can be gated on with an electronic controller circuit. You might contact these people if you are in the market for one...
