I believe the answer is that many times you have multiple power transmission lines running along the same route, using the same towers. Coupling between good and faulted transmission lines causes an error with remote fault location. Current transformers are used with the fault locator to compensate for this error.

...."The issue of mutual compensation relates to the setting reach that a ground distance relay encounters during ground faults when parallel lines are present. ... This method is used for convenience so that the phase distance relays and the ground distance relays can be set to the same point on the protected line."...

In many years of testing distance relays after faults they invariably worked correctly but given real world faults the outcome of the tripping was never as the engineers planned for the trips would show up in once removed trip relays.

Can we blame it on gravity waves or wavering gravity?

mutual compensation current transformer applies to the complexity of ground distance relay experiences when parallel lines are present during ground failures. This approach is used to make the phase distance relays and the floor distance relays on the covered line the same level.
