FTP proxy and Wago 750-841 PFC

10/26/2007 11:53 AM

I have a 750-841 Wago programmable field controller as data acquisition system running behind the firewalls and protections of a private network.

The unit gathers all the data from different measurement devices on three local networks (RS485, M-bus and Ethernet) and is meant to send this data through to an FTP server on the internet.

The data is also presented on a website for the local users.

This process is blocked by the gateway server and they only allow communication through proxy servers from ARCOR.

The 750-841 PFC does not support the proxy functionality, so I am a bit blocked.

Does someone have an idea how to solve this?

Can't you assign the PFC an Ethernet address and add that address to the proxy server?

Are we asking or hacking?

Well that is how this needs to be solved and I assume they already did this.

But,

The PLC does not know how to handle communication through a proxy. (you need to tell IE also that he needs to go to a certain proxy server before he can use it, at least on that network the proxy server is not broadcasting or announcing its presence)

I fear having to change the PLC with a more performing unit.

Can you be a bit more specific about how your network is laid out?

The way I understand a proxy server is that the server advertises a single IP address on one side, then maps that address to other IP addresses on the other side. Why would this pose a problem to your PLC? I must be missing something.

This network setup was a bit surprising for me: no DHCP, only fixed IP addresses, every setting needed to be entered manually (gateway, DNS, ..)

The proxy server needed to be entered in IE manually before my computer could find his way out. The VPN module from my company could not find his way out.

The way I understand a proxy server is that you ask the server for a certain service and he announces you which IP:port you can use. He then maps an outgoing port to this internal port. and this only for this special service, as soon as you need another service, you need to request it again. This way specific services are blocked, FTP in this case.

Now they have an FTP proxy, but the FTP software I use does not know this style of communication. So I'm blocked.

So your PLC uses FTP and it cannot be configured to use a proxy server? Is there a possibility of switching it over to telnet or some other protocol? FTP is usually used for transferring files and not active communications.

I don't suppose this helps, but if you go to IE > tools > Internet Options > advanced, you can set use passive FTP.

Is there anyway you can get a connection that goes around the proxy server? You may have to do some clandestine work on a patch panel or two.
