10/26/2007 12:41 PM

I have a problem I have an old Gateway computer that I installed window Xp home on I set up a user account as Admin and put a password on it. Then I bought a new computer and started using it. I can not find the Windows Xp disc and can not remember the password to the old computer but I need to get access to it. How do I get around the password or how do I find out what the password is HELP

There's a boatload of password recovery utilities out there. Google it and pick the one you like.

If you want to access your files off the old machine, you can slave the hard drive from your old machine to your new one.

Remove the HDD from the old machine. The easiest way to hook it up your new machine is to get a USB to IDE (I'm assuming your old HDD is IDE) adapter. Borrow one from some computer geek or your local friendly computer repair shop. Hook it up to a USB port ( make sure you have power to the old drive) and you should be able to go under "my computer" and access your old drive and the files.

This is a real shortened version so if you have problems or need more help send me a note and we'll get more in depth.

I've never had much luck with the password breakers so I always pulled the data before I did anything with the OS.

I tested one and posted the solution in Experts-Exchange under 'timothyfryer' for Windows XP. I think it was from the website below. If I can find my solution at EE again, I'll post it later. Otherwise, try the link below. Some of them do work so don't give up.

Hi charly61fl, was that your similar post recently before you'd registered ? No matter, Welcome to CR4.

Is this site of any help. If it wasn't you on the other thread, look around CR4's computing section using the Search box to the right for more help and related threads. One of the suggestions I recall was removing, then reinserting the motherboard battery. Slaving the drive as Randyl suggest seems like a good option.

Are you interested in data you have in old PC , or utilise both PCs simultaneously through LAN say.you can remove HDD from old computer and connect to new computer in slave mode just mentioned by our friend and copy data to new HDD or keep it permenantly ,or if you want to use old PC also than try password breakers and utilities available through local stores, internet , if you can. or else straight away format HDD after booting from cd or floppy and reinstall new system after recovering data , we had experiances some 12 /13 years back while working on LAN , we used to forget passwords or used to loose written password slip sometimes but also very often due to nature of routine works , we had trouble formating HDD having server installation , for that we had solution creating a user apart from administrator with easy password in our own name or company name or client name or same password as username , so after booting up clients used to asign there own passwords to administrator and thus saved trouble remembering for us

I had a similar problem. A cousin passed away and my aunt needed access to her account information on her laptop that had a Windows password on it. There are boot disks out there have a utility that allows you to change any user account password in Windows XP.

Note: Try 1st

Chance may be that the Administrator password set to a blank password. In this case, do not type a password before you click OK.

Solution 1 Recover only data on your HDD:

Take out the old disk & insert itin new PC as "Slave" to primaryor as "Secondary Master or Slave"

It will appear as Disk-1 or Disk-2 [Whilethe the original Disk of new PC as Disk-0 0r 1 whatever it may be]

All the data will be available for all purposes.

"My Documents" & its sub-directories may or may not be visible.

Solution 2: Recover Password as suggested by Dennis Faas <http://www.infopackets.com/>

Can't login to Admin Account (WinXP) <http://www.infopackets.com/channels/en/windows/gazette/2004/20040623_cannot_log_into_admin_account_winxp.htm>

Gazette Reader Dale D. writes:
" Dear Dennis,
I'm having trouble logging into my user account under Windows XP. It seems that my password is no longer valid and now I can't get in. The only way I can login to the system is to do so under my son's account which does not have administrative rights. Also, when I go to Control Panel -> Users (under my son's account), my user account is not listed. Any ideas how I can resolve this? "

My response:
Depending on the access level applied to your son's account, he may / may not be able to see any other accounts listed on the system. In his case, the access level is low enough that Windows XP will not display any other user accounts.
The best option here is to reset your account password.
You can do this using either 1 of the 2 methods suggested by Microsoft Knowledge Base article #321305 <http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=321305>.

In my opinion, the second method described on this page is most likely the easiest route:

Reboot Windows in Safe Mode.
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type the following command, and then click OK:

control userpasswords2

Click the user account that you forgot the password for, and then click Reset Password.

Type a new password in both the New password and the Confirm new password boxes, and then click OK.

Good luck!

Side note:
To access Safe Mode, Click Start -> Shutdown (or Turn Off), and choose 'Restart'. Once the computer restarts, press F8 repeatedly on the keyboard until a Boot Menu appear (this *must* be done before the Windows boot screen appears).
Finally, choose to boot Windows in Safe Mode and press Enter on the keyboard.
