Spring Steel Tubing

02/22/2020 5:28 AM

Hi all

I am a draughtsman not an engineer

I am using this forum for the first time.

Doing some drawings where the material is supposedly spring steel.

Unfamiliar with Spring steel in the form of tubing.

Does it come in the form of tubing?

Where can I find information on sizes and availability, if it does?

Yes it does, this site may be of some help.

Thanks for that link

https://www.dhanlaxmisteel.com/en-45-spring-steel-round-bar-supplier-exporter.html

unfortunately I cannot access that site

This page can’t be displayed

Turn on TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1, and TLS 1.2 in Advanced settings and try connecting to https://www.dhanlaxmisteel.com again. If this error persists, it is possible that this site uses an unsupported protocol or cipher suite such as RC4 (link for the details), which is not considered secure. However I will keep trying, maybe on another device

Perhaps that's due to some restrictions of South Africa, or of some part of the internet links between you and the source.

Clicking on the original link worked for me with no problems. Mac, Safari, Private home, AT&T internet provider, USA.

Are you sure this isn't spring steel supported tubing?

Yes Positive

Here is a picture. It is 2 short tube sleeves on each side of a long round bar.

Used for tent frames.

Maybe the round bar is spring steel and the tubes ordinary (mild) steel.

They are both magnetic.

Size of tube measured with a vernier is internal diameter 9.5mm

external diameter 12.9mm

Oh ok this is probably spring steel rod used in pop-up tent frames...

Yes

Then the rods are definitely spring steel. What would you say the tubes or sleeves

and stop washers at each end of the rods are? Probably not spring steel? Probably some type of stainless steel?

Well you would probably want a similar grade of steel to avoid dissimilar metal contact...but no need for spring steel in the non-flexing parts...

..."Many grades of steel can be hardened and tempered to suit application as a spring; however, some steels exhibit more desirable characteristics for spring applications."...

Thanks guys for all your input
You have really helped me immensely!
I have never been on an engineering forum before only draughting software forums.

So I have put the long round bars as spring steel
I have put the short tubes and round bar loops at the end as stainless steel
(I haven't specified the grade)
If necessary I will add that on later when the customer or manufacturer decides
Previously for bigger tubes od 1 " (25.4mm) x 20# (0.9mm) wall thickness
(manufacturing done in China then India)
I have specified Stainless Steel grade 201

I have put the washers as stainless steel
Once again I haven't specified the grade, but I guess those come standard
off the shelf and don't have to be specifically made

Canadianslidewinder
Yes I believe those spring poles are done in fibreglass too, but my current
set of manufacturing drawings is for the steel ones

Phoenix911
My initial guesses were completely wrong, that everthing including the
tube is spring steel.
I can now see why there is no such thing as spring steel tube

Solar Eagle
Many thanks for guiding me through this one from start to finish

I will definitely be using these engineering forums again

Every tent I've ever owned has had fibreglass spring poles. Hunkered down in a steel framed tent on a high open meadow during a thunderstorm? No thanks.

Oh it's ok. Get rid of the tent stakes and replaced them with grounding rods and bond the tent.

It’s interesting that tubing would be made out of spring steel,... just due to deformation, or even manufaturability.

tubing is stiff, (metallurgy term) stiffer than a solid bar. Per cross sectional area.
