The Five Year Mask

04/08/2020 4:16 PM

A half face mask with a uv-c sterilized air supply...pretty cool

..."Medi-Immune, a UK firm, recently revealed ProtectivAir, a breathing device that uses UVc light to sterilize inhaled air and protect wearers against airborne pathogens, potentially including SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19). The device is meant to be used by healthcare staff and others with occupational exposure to airborne pathogens.

ProtectivAir consists of a nose and mouth mask that connects, via a flexible hose, to a small irradiation chamber worn on a belt or harness. The irradiation chamber uses UVc photons to disinfect inhaled air. UVc damages a pathogen’s DNA or RNA, which prevents it from replicating and infecting the body."...

Interesting, but.......Is the five year life, the life of the device, or how long it would take the average person to pay for it?

If this report ↓ is redundant, sorry.

If proven effective, could it ever be practical for anyone but the richest?

I had to enlarge it significantly to read it, but I love the label: "Who gives a Crap".

Maybe the UV-C takes care of those stinky molecules...

The five year limit could well be the lifetime of the plastic chamber. Most plastics don't hold up well when exposed to any kind of UV, and I expect that to be more so with UV-C. Teflon is definitely an exception, at least to Solar UV. I've had Teflon antenna insulators in the sun for nearly 50 years, with little or no visible degradation.

I would think the exposure to uvc would have minimal effect due to the shorter wavelength...the shorter wavelength would not penetrate the plastic surface....though mainly I think it would be due to limited ozone generation...

I'm not sure. Most plastics are pretty good insulators, which commonly means they are transparent to EM waves, but whether that transparency continues up into those frequencies (or down into those short wavelengths), I don't know.

The articles I read on 222nm UV specifically said the waves were rapidly absorbed by organic materials like the outer layers of skin and the tear layer of the eyes. I didn't see anything about absorption in other materials, nor did I see anything about reflection. I do know that telescopes use different reflective coatings for different wavelengths, so it may not be trivial to find a good reflector for these wavelengths.

Polished aluminum is a good reflector of uv light...

I'm skeptical that the "contact" time is sufficient to kill or disable the pathogens. Given the small size, air velocity seems like it might be too fast through the chamber for any real efficacy. Is there any testing data that goes with it. Great idea but I'd like to see more data.

Cool. Considering the place it is mounted, the term recycling comes to mind. Hope it works on E-coli.
