Why Does My Bottle of Spirit Have "50mm" Printed on it?

04/29/2020 10:54 AM

I was looking through my drinks cupboard (as you do in lockdown), and, found this bottle of Osborne 103 (Spanish spirit drink).

I have no idea when I bought it and didn't know what it was like. I suspect that I was given a sample in a duty free shop on my way back from holiday one year, and just decided to buy it.

It tastes like a sort of watered down brandy or perhaps a sort of slightly fruit flavoured vodka.

Any way on the back I found this

It's a 1 litre bottle so 100cl is understandable, but, what on earth could "50mm" mean on a bottle of liquid.

That full line reads " 100cl ∋ 50mm 26 \/ " (no idea what that last symbol is I've approximated).

One really ought to present the empty bottle for recycling. Outrageous!

Was that a charge of neglect?

All liquid containers need to be emptied prior to recycling. There seems to have been an interruption to due procedure.

Did you bother to measure the diameter of the bottom of the bottle or its height?

Given that the space between the webs of a commonplace British central heating double radiator, on which it stands, is of the order of 50mm it is unlikely to be anything to do with the <...bottle...height...>.

Thanks to all who replied: the bottle diameter internal and external is much greater than 50mm

PWS I probably will drink it all eventually but I'd rather drink "real" brandy or preferably grain whisky.

I think the 50mm is the amount of empty bottle space allowed when containing the stated amount of liquor....

That sounds very feasible: I've found two adverts for the same drink with quite different ullage levels

That second one is getting quite close to the 50mm

I've also found four other bottles with similar measures around the bottom or on the bottom but all close to the total volume amount.

Ouzo..............100cl...65mm

Castle&Crag...700ml...66mm

Haig Club.......700ml...44mm

London Dry Gin..70cl...40mm

The last two are short squat bottles with short necks.

Clearly requires a lot more research .

Maybe it has something to do with temperature.....

So it would be 50mm @ 26° C...

I think that ullage is most affected by evaporation and absobtion by the cork, but, temperature also cleary plays a role.

I'm talking about the spec for initial bottle fill....at 26°C the bottle will contain 100cl when 50mm free space remains in the neck of the bottle....then you can adjust gap for temperature variance mathematically....

OK it's possible, but, I think your earlier sugestion at #10 is more likely.

The old fashioned bottle fillers were adjusted by inserting or removing spacer washers from the filler stem assembly.

This had to be done every time a bottle size was changed.

A straight-through travel path for the bottles simplified the system.

Perhaps this was a quick check for the set-up mechanic to calibrate for this particular bottle.

This was before the digital models were used, but there are probably a lot of these old ones around;they were simple rugged and built to last, and with proper adjustment were very accurate.

Each 50 mm - you have to measure with a scale - would be 100 cl on the cylindcrical portion (above the marking) - approximate calculations based on your scale seem to indicate that. Of course who would measure and pour, and why, when there are cups available, I don't know !

100 cl is the total volume in the bottle ( 100 centilitres = 1 litre ).
