Finite Element Analysis of Non-Metallic Structures

10/31/2007 9:11 AM

I would like to complete an FEA analysis on a composite sheet, it consists of a balsa wood core, fiberglass components and Polyester resin. I would like to read up on completing analysis on such structures somewhere on the web. Would anyone know of any good resources please.

Presumabley if you have FE software you'll have access to the manuals? If your code allows for composite shell elements (has a composite shell property input option) then input is a matter of describing the layers, their thickness and referring them to material definitions. You of course need sensible material models for each. That's the easy part. Interpretting the results is a question of checking for failure both within a layer and in the shear between the layers and using failure criteria appropriate to both the material and it's position within the whole.

If you have to, you can define the composite using multiple shells on the same grid points so long as you can offset their position in the 'thro-thickness' direction with respect to the nodes/grids.

www.abdmatrix.com may have some informative literature on the subject of calculating material properties of composite layups etc.
