Additional Grounding in TN Systems

06/27/2020 6:01 PM

Hello everyone,

in TN-C-S or TN-S sistems we have protective PE conductor from transformer to our houses, but typicaly we made our "own earthing" around our houses with usually FeZn 25x4mm. Why we make this, when we already have PE from substation?

To protect the house from a short to, or break in, ground, between the transformer and your house...You can't be responsible for somebody else's property, therefore you must have and maintain an autonomous grounding system...

Why is such situation TN-C-S or TN-S systems are used. If you need your own grounding system then TT system should be the first choice?

Well I imagine a lot of these installations are based on legacy system add-on's, so they are governed by local codes...There is a range of methods that have been adopted for safety over time...so the age of the system you are tying in to, is the one you must conform to...everything is determined by code, it's not often an arbitrary choice...

The idea is to prevent a difference in electrical potential(voltage).

The earth is not a perfect conductor,it has resistance, and that resistance is not linear and varies from area to area.

Imagine walking along the surface of a potentiometer..there would be a voltage differential between each leg as you walked.

By a providing separate ground at each house, the potential differences are minimized.

I agree, but why not use then TT instead of TN-C-S or TN-S with additional grounding?

If in doubt, consult a qualified local Electrician.

Ask the <...we...>!

Did the <...we...> do it so as to reduce the risk of electric shock in the case of a broken neutral in a TN-C-S system?
