Selection of Filter Media

11/03/2007 3:13 AM

Hello,

Am trying to figure out how to select the appropriate filter media for a solid liquid separation. I have data on the solvents so I could select the material of the media quite easily. What I need to do is to select the mesh size based on particle distribution data. At this point I have no idea of the type of material - crystalline or amorphous etc. So the question is just from the particle distribution data in the slurry which details the particle size in microns against % volume (a normally distributed curve), can I make a selection or recommendation?

Thanks, guys.

The best data in the world isn't going to make up for a good old test. Use what you have to build a test run and go from there. Just out of curiosity what kind of filtration are you using. Filter press, belt press, vacuum belt ..closed system etc. ... etc. ....

Factors to take into account include volumetric flow rate, system pressure, size of particles to be removed etc. Also, if you are filtering highly corrosive liquids or organic solvents, you have to ensure your filter housing & media can resist attack.

Hi,

I think these are good points... nothing can replace a pilot plant test results to determine the media. The question is if we have the data that gives the particle size vs volume % based on test data and we know that the media could be handled by SS 304, would the data on particle size be enough to select the mesh size.

Contact a filter manufacturer with the appropriate data and let them make the recommendation for you.
