I believe you are referring to circuit breaker coordination. Try researching to tern " Selective coordination"

We have sent circulars to various Industrial customers.extract is sent herewith to explain what is coordination study.May be useful to you.

ramesh

Protection / Coordination Study: What is co-ordination To put it simply, coordination means that downstream devices (breakers/fuses) should activate before upstream devices. This minimizes the portion of the system effected by a fault or other disturbance. At the substation level, feeder breakers should trip before the main. Likewise, downstream panel breakers should trip before the substation feeder supplying the panel Who should go for coordination study Nuisance tripping? If you've ever had a breaker trip for a fault that should have been cleared by a downstream device, your facility would benefit from a coordination study. Many breakers have adjustable trip units. Do you know where yours are set, and why? If the answer's no, a Coordination Study is overdue Why co ordination Study To avoid nuisance tripping a coordination study is a great solution Helps reduce unnecessary downtime! Provides recommended settings for adjustable trip circuit breakers and relays. Helps increase coordination ( selectivity) between devices. Identifies deficiencies in system protection. Provides recommended solutions to help correct problem areas. Reviews and discusses the use of system devices with respect to National Electric Code requirements, and appropriate ANSI/IEEE standards. What is our role Our objective is to help you make best use of the equipment already in place. we provide engineering services, but don't sell equipment, so you can rest assured that any recommendations made are based on sound engineering principles and accepted industry practices We examines the size and settings of protective devices in system. National Electric Code requirements and ANSI/IEEE standards are considered to determine if existing devices are adequately applied. What Tools used : We use latest tools like ETAP EASYPOWER DOCWIN SIMARIS ECODIAL –Engineering software for Electrical Distribution System Design What's provided: The interconnection of the system is observed and recorded in engineering field notes Drawings of the system are developed using AutoCAD and provided on, A3 , and computer drawing files on CD. Recommended sizes and/or settings are provided in a written report aimed towards improving system protection and coordination
