What makes this interesting to me is the probability of common attachment points for the different types of coronavirus. If this is the case then a person heavily loaded by one coronavirus might be less susceptible to heavy loading by another simply because there are only so many attachment points available.

Well said. Unfortunately you've touched on the scary, down side of political adversaries performing this work and raised the concept of biological warfare as you dismiss this mass destruction boogeyman. One can then very easily jump to the conclusion you are fear mongering and spinning conspiracy theories. I don't believe this is your intent, Gavilan, mainly because you start with the title "this conversation needs to take place", indeed it should.

Without dismissing the worries, can we please try to locate the positives of doing this type of research.

First and probably most importantly this research must be presented in public. Not the public forums of memes, sound bites, jingoism or any of the places where people "stir the pot" to make trouble just for their own amusement. This research must be presented in the highly technical public forums where people already understand most if not all of the presented jargon.

The major positive I see of this research is in trying to identify how a pathogen can become benign or at the very least less worrisome long before such a remedy is needed.

This post has double edge as shown is the posts, one edge is conspiracies, the other edge is political tool.

My opinionis, to be proactive, research and No matter the safeguard that are in place, there are still risks, and needs to take place.

And as stated when COVID first came out, where there were individuals that Over reacted and panicked and blamed for not having a vaccination ready and waiting on their door step is ridicules... with this type of distraction, it does not help in combating the issues at hand.

But Mother Nature will not stop mutating pathogens and near pathogens because some countries sign and abides with a treaty. This concept is the crux of the discussion you requested. The risks are there whether we add to them by being careless or reduce them by being fastidiously cautious.

Burying our heads in the sand will not help to mitigate anything. Identifying the risk of doing nothing only codifies a baseline for comparison.
