Cool Under Pressure---NOT

Check out this link about pressure sensitive materials used to cool/heat.

Seems like it would require an enormous amount of energy to provide enough squishing and squashing to cool a house...what we need is an energy efficiency evaluation, btu's in vs btu's out...We currently get 16+ btu's per watt on most systems now....that's not easy to beat....solid state is in watts per btu, I suspect this would go in the same direction...

You are right, much work has to be done before it is viable and efficient, but who knows what may turn up as a unique combination of materials and piezo actuators to perform the compression.Perhaps a "2cycle piezo" that compresses, decompresses two pieces of the material on alternate strokes.I imagine a piezo element sandwiched between two layers of this material.I don't know how rapidly the heat transfer happens,so this may not be feasible.

The Earth Source Heat Pumps provide well over 20BTU/Watt,and when the ground freezes around the "slinky" type, the latent heat is captured too for heating,so these will be around for a long time.

Yes but they are initially expensive to install....so the payback is a lot like solar cells...maybe eventually you might save some money, or you might just break even...leaks can be very expensive...

The solar cell installation companies do not calculate the cost of the batteries for the 20 year term.

IF I were going to install a solar system,I would use the Edison Iron Battery, size and weight are not a problem, but they typically last for 20-30 years and are very forgiving of overcharge, undercharge, low electrolyte, etc.

True, the initial cost is higher, but the total cost of ownership over the long run is less. These type batteries are often used in remote locations where parts and servicing are very hard to come by and reliability is paramount, such as arctic locations. With a typical lifetime of around 30 years,it is a good investment,I think.

I would just go with a nuclear battery, never needs recharge, lasts forever, made from waste products....haha

In winter I heat my house by alphabetically arranging the books on my bookshelves, and in summer, I cool it by scrambling them up again

How does that work with virtual books?

On a quantum level, using a 'chained Zeno' effect*, I just have to think about rearranging the books.

To put them back,I just have to actually observe them.

Ok,so your car tires could actually cool or heat your car if harnessing this property becomes efficient?

I think the problem with flexing rubber for cooling is that you are also creating heat from friction. That works in your favor if you want more heat in the hot reservoir but not in your favor for removing heat from the cold reservoir.
