Caller ID Lookup

09/08/2020 12:30 PM

There are many caller-ID identifier sites,so there must be a program,or programs they are using for the lookup.

In the prehistoric days, before the internet,a reverse lookup directory was published,in printed form, but it has now gone on line and not generally available.

I do not want a total history of the person(s) making the call,I simply want the number.

Does anyone know the "secret" software they use?

Jus' wondering....

I have yet to find one. Some give addresses, but in general you must pay for the phone number.

So many numbers are spoofed now, it's not a reliable way to get information on who's calling...I get about a half dozen a day, not to mention notices of packages not delivered and other spams and scams....I never answer the phone anymore unless it's a number that's in my contact list, if it's a legit call they can leave a message...

You are right about the spoofed numbers--I even got a call from my own number, had to block my own number with Call Blocker, and there are an almost infinite list of numbers they can spoof.I feel like Don Quixote,in the sense that I am battling windmills.

Being confined to mostly home turf now,I get bored and would like to return the favors,at around 2AM,but most of the numbers are not valid when I try to call them back.

The DO Not Call List is useless.NO enforcement...just bla..bla..bla.. when you complain.

I would still like to find the search engine that these pay for info sites use to get their info.

The phone company has a "Caller Hold" feature by default, which allows a caller to keep the line open until they hang up.This can disable your phone or land line connected alarms.

This harkens back to the days of stepping relays in central offices, where the numbers had to be hand wired.Old ways die hard,I suspect.

Sort of like camel dung used on saddles in WWI.

This should be changed to a called party hold by default. That would enable call tracing even if the calling party hangs up and you can hold the connection until the trace has completed.

Someone, somewhere is paying for a service to call you,and the entity that receives payment has a record of the transaction.Even if it is an internet call it could be traced if enough effort is put into it.

It's a waste of time to block the numbers as they use a different number every time....

..."By tracing anonymous text messages, we can catch a spoof caller. However, most spoofing services are one way only, especially when it comes to scams. The person can send messages to you, but you cannot reply. In these one-way cases, it may not be possible to identify the origins of the spoofed messages or calls.May 10, 2019

https://www.rexxfield.com/tracing-a-spoofed-phone-number/

If these people could be traced and made to stop, it would have already been done...

..."How Do I Stop Someone From Spoofing My Number? The reality is that there is no real way to protect your phone number from getting spoofed. Numbers are selected at random, so it's not like you can be specifically targeted. The only real immediate action you can take is to change your number.Sep 14, 2018"...

...and changing your number is only a temporary fix as you have to keep changing it ever so often, and you might end up with a worse number that gets spammed even more....so

There used to be a free reverse lookup called switchboard.com that gave quite a bit of details, but it has been taken over by a pay per use.

In the UK you could have a unit that displayed the incoming number but there was a monthly charge. My BT cordless phone records the incoming numbers & alerts me to say how many calls I received whilst I was out. My land line is supplied by Sky & their call blocking service requires the caller to identify themselves before I decide to pick up the call or not. After having this service for a year or more, I now receive almost no spam calls.

Re: Caller ID Lookup

I have a "Call Blocker" that allows me to block a call when it is coming in,or afterwards by entering a code to block the last number called,or any number by using a different code.It can also block entire area codes.I also have a device that audibly announces the number calling.

I have also recorded a "wrong number" tone at the beginning of the answering machine message, and this will block some computer generated calls that are "fishing" for a valid number. The "enemies" computer is programmed to hang up if it hears this tone.

I have blocked thousands of calls, but they still keep on coming from different numbers.

Re: Caller ID Lookup

There is a certain set and sequence of frequencies that will put the caller equipment in a "loop back mode" that will require manual intervention to restore, but that was many years ago and I have forgotten how,but it required special equipment to do it.

I am sure the governmental agencies still have that ability,as well as the ability to tap any phone number remotely by simply dialing the first 9 digits of the number.

All modern phones have this sneaky feature built in.(Of course, they will deny it.)

If you have an old land-line analog, rotary dial phone it is the exception, but still the pulse has to be converted to tones in their equipment,so all bets are off on that now.

Paranoid,am I ? Sure,but a little paranoia is healthy,especially in today's climate.

This may be my last post, who knows?*
