The only peaceful society, is a dead society....without conflict there is no stimulation, and without stimulation there is no growth, only stagnation and death....We had advanced societies that lived in harmony with the Earth before the evil white man came(lol)...so you have several examples to ponder....Any advanced society that you are thinking of, would probably hunt us for sport, or worse...

I wouldn't be in a big hurry to be discovered, even though it's you that think of yourself as the discoverer...any 'advanced society' if it truly is, is probably not going to announce their presence until they want something....then it will be too late for us to mount a defense, because they will have planned our fate down to the fine details with their machines....

Life in america was not peace and harmony with nature, there were wars, death, raids, slavery, pillage and rape. some of the tribes were peaceful others were war machines. Comanche tribe was a fierce group that any outsider didn't want to meet be it white or red or any color in between.

It may sound romantic to believe there was harmony here before "the white man", as today's history will have you believe that, but read some old books on the subject for the truth, if they have not yet been burned.

What could they possibly want from us?

The asteroid belt has many more minerals and metals than Earth,and many planets are gaseous with methane and hydrogen atmospheres and comets are full of water.

Stars have plenty of plasma and magnetic fields.

So would they view us like watching the gladiator games,and introducing conflict when action gets too slow?

Who knows.

But I also know we would be much further ahead if all of our energies were expended toward peaceful pursuits instead of better ways to kill each other.

You don't have to feed and clothe most of the used cannon fodder after the war. This method of culling the herd is so much more politically acceptable.

We could sell them our latest high-tech technology items as tourist trinkets, assuming they are collectors of primitive species artifacts...

I think it was Willy Ley that proposed the idea that if aliens are visiting our solar system that they are most likely tourists just visiting the natural wonders. Very much like us visiting the Grand Canyon and ignoring the ants on the ground.

So how long do you think it will be before we discover faster than light travel?...any guesses?...Is it even possible?

Because of time dilation, the passengers of a spaceship traveling at close to the speed of light could travel 100 lightyears in less than 100 years by their time. So, in a sense, they would be traveling "faster than light". As long as they didn't plan to return to or contact earth, there would be no practical difference for these passengers.

There would be considerable engineering problems. It would take a huge amount of energy, and it would be a very bad thing to run into a speck of dust at 0.999c !

Now that is an interesting non sequitur reply to my comment about Willy Ley. Did Bigfoot confuse you about the difference between superluminal travel and communication?

Perhaps the yeti's are visitors from other planets, that's why we can never find them, they just visit for a time while on vacation then fly off in their invisible light ships....

The first ships to attempt a galactic crossing will never make it to the finish;Newer better,faster ships will overtake them,and they in turn will be overtaken by the next generation of ships,etc,etc,until till we finally achieve FTL speed.

Perhaps even worm holes will be found and exploited.

I think Isaac Asimov mentioned this in one of his stories.

There is only a small time period between the discovery of radio and the discovery of nuclear destruction so I predict the chance of finding "intelligent" life by this method quite slim.

we are part alien life and were visited too soon which changed religion from sun god worship. we are now observed like tribes in the amazon. i often joke that we are an alien high school science fair project, but in reality i don't think it is far off from the truth. Can't go further into detail without being deemed a racist in today's climate.
