To Find the Right Belt Clamp for Bucket Elevator

09/11/2020 6:32 AM

Hi guys,

I would ask you if you know of any supplier of belt clamp for bucket elevator. Ours keep breaking at its level and I am looking for this another design in order to make the equipment reliable. Thanks in advance

It is important to use the proper clamp for the type of belt material and the weight limits for the belt.Maintain proper tension(slack) in belting. The belts must track true or they will generate a shear force, which looks like the case you have. Also ,any large nicks or cuts on the edge will create a concentration of shear forces(Stress Riser) and eventually lead to failure.

Check the specs for this info.

Observe the bend radius requirements, and inspect and replace belts with signs of fatigue and age.

Be certain that the clamps re installed properly, using a torque wrench, and that all clamps are parallel with the belt, and do not over tighten the clamps, this can weaken the belt at the clamping point.

The image shown indicates that the clamp was not properly installed;the clamp plates are diagonal creating a shear point at the highest edge.

Looks like you need a tougher belt design....

I was just about to say that,... the clamp didn’t fail,.. the belt did.

HiTek is right also...

the problem may not be the clamp or the belt...

just from the picture... if one did a failure analysis on it... what was causing it?

  • over over stressing the belt?
  • belt too light,
  • Actual wrong belt material where its not pliable enough,... (obvious compromises for mitigation correction)

Notice the right side clamp..it is penetrating some of the belt material, causing a weak point, which is where the tear began.

It progressed through all of the other clamps from right to left, like tearing a sheet of paper on the dotted lines.

No matter the type of belt material, this is an improper installation of the clamps.

Thank you, your answer is really helpful, however, our belt lasted almost 12 years so...

I think, fatigue is a failure cause too.

sorry for the misunderstanding, my english is not really good. I mean, until now, i have seen three belt failure, all of them are broken on this belt clamp level. Some have lasted just on year.

So you agree that care should be taken when applying the clamps....? I might add regular and timely visual inspections as a maintenance procedure, is also important...In any case a cost benefit evaluation is necessary to determine whether a more expensive stronger belt is cost effective against regular replacement of the cheaper belts...or perhaps it's just a quality control issue from the manufacturer..so maybe some destructive testing is called for, if it seems prudent...

You say some of the belts have lasted 12 years, take a look at the clamps and material type on these for reference.
