Cyclone Calculations

11/08/2007 2:44 AM

I would like to know the considerations for making cyclone selection calculations. I have got Manganese fines (-8 to +1mm) that I need to separate from the ore. It has been recommnded to use a Dense Media Cyclone with FeSi as the separating media.

What are the design calculations/considerations that I need to take care of? What is the Cyclone selection process like?

I have no mining experience, Please help.

What do you mean by -8mm diameter? Virtually all cyclones will remove at 50% of airborne particulates of diameter 10 microns and above. The larger the particulate diameter, the more effective the removal is.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclonic_separation

Link for simple explanation of cyclone separation. A copy of "Industrial Ventilation" by the ACGIH or "Fan Engineering" from Buffalo Forge will have additional design criteria.

Cyclones are usually custom fabrications. If you are lucky, maybe a local fabricator can offer some guidance on sizing based on a review of your process. I had similar help for a small paperboard separation cyclone.
