Spinal Cord Injury Pill to be Tested

02/11/2006 2:40 PM

Imagine if spinal cord injuries could heal. Scientists are doing just that with a new pill based on. two antibodies that allowed paralized rats to walk again. The pill blocks the protein Nogo, which itself blocks nerves from growing. Scientists worry however that by allowing nerves to grow, unwanted changes in brain wiring among other problems, could occur. The pill has now reached the stage for human testing, to see how effective, and dangerous, it is.

Spinal Cord Injury

03/01/2006 10:41 AM

Interesting! I worked with a research physician from a nearby hospital a few years ago to design a device whereby a rat's spinal cord could be injured with some repeatability. Prior to that, rat's spinal cords were being damaged randomly and various antiinflammatory drugs were being tested for their effectiveness in recovery. Without knowing how badly the spinal cord had been injured however, the relative effectiveness of the different drugs could not be ascertained. The repeatable injury device reduced the uncertainty and allowed better comparisons of drugs.
