Oil Spill Clean-Up

11/12/2007 12:47 PM

In the Wall Street Journal today, 11-12-07, page B10 there was an item about an inventor who uses radio waves to light salt water on fire. Also, safety notices state oxygen users should keep petroleum products away from oxygen lines. Is it possible to use a combination of radio waves and pure oxygen to burn off oil slicks like we now have in San Francisco Bay? The very flammable content of the bunker oil has evaporated, but the remaining 'sludge' might be able to be burned off in a very controlled way.

The volitiles are what burn. The sludge is essentially road tar. Bioremediation is the way to go with this, Shell LAbs has literally thousands of microbes (self-limiting, safe) for this particular app, but some Luddites have a thing about the same person spilling a drink and cleaning it up. I always thought of it as being common courtesy, but who knows.

The interesting thing would be if somehow these bacteria found themselves back at Saudi Arabia. What would happen to that country's standing in the World if they got a really good infection!!!

Oxygen is contained under very high pressure.

Petroleum products self-ignite at these pressures.

Look at the diesel engine.

Oxygen does not ignite petroleum, the pressure does.
