Router Access

11/15/2007 8:10 AM

Hello. Pls, I have problems with one of my routers in my office. The router just became inaccessible all of a sudden and could no longer recognise my signatures. What could be wrong since my security gadgets and other nodes do not show any sign of been compromised. How do I crack back into the router without lossing my detail configurations.

This is for urgent attention and any useful advice will be of great value.

Most routers come with a console port, where you attach a cable (usually serial) directly to it. There is usually no need for a password, and if there is, it will probably be a standard password used by the manufacturer. A lot of these type of devices have a manufacturer set password that can be used in a emergencies such as these, and its worth contacting them to find out.

Failing that its probably time to buy a new router. When you have fixed this problem, consider putting administration of your network on a separate (Internal only) network and keep it secured behind a firewall. Make sure that there is no possible external access to the admin port - and you won't suffer this kind of problem again.

Cheers

John

If your router has a firewall most probably it interferes with your PC firewall. I had the same problem, I disabled My PC's firewall and the problem was gone. One firewall is enough so don't worry about disabling your PC's Firewall.

Good luck

Even the console port requires password not known to me. I have my equipment behind layered firewalls and security gadgets

What is the Make and Model of the router. Most manufacturers have a standard password for the console port that is easy to find on the internet. If the passwords have all been changed and you have no record of them you may be out of luck.

Typically there is a reset button that will set the router back to factory defaults, but this will wipe out you current configuration. I am not trying to be patronizing, but you really need to keep backups of the router configs for just this situation. If you have an outside consultant do the setups insist that you get a copy of all the config scripts and passwords. Store them someplace safe.

I feel your pain. I have been in a similar situation.

Have a look here:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/location/2700/quick/guide/loc27icg.html

That shows you with the 4MB handbook (Download the .pdf file)

Your router has default admin and user passwords.

Cheers
