I would think it's about supply and demand.

You need to research what the demand is for....

Maybe the bits that need replacement most often. e.g Brake parts and exhausts or bits that get damaged in accidents...front forks?

The first thing you need to do is determine the target market and advertise to that market. You can't advertise towards a young crowd and expect it to work on the old Goldwing riders.

Is there a need? Do you have established competitors?

Did you do the research to determine a good business location?

How are you planning to advertise? Are you willing to invest in good advertising?

Just putting an ad in the yellow pages and the newspaper is not enough. You have to do something to get peoples attention and want to come to your store over those that are already in business.

Are you prepared to dedicate all your time to the business for the next 2 to 5 years while the company will still be in the red for the duration of that time until you can establish a customer base?

You must create a Mission Statement.

You must create a Company Vision.

You must post this where it can be seen often.

85% of all start up companies fail because they do not do these things.

Primarily it's because they give up before the 5 year mark. It takes 2 to 5 years to establish a customer base to start supporting the business with something other then business loans.

1 - All will depend on your equipment and capabilities.

2 - Select parts that wear out most often - regardless of manufacturer.

3 - Select parts that consumers gripe about the "high price." Can you produce it

and sell it for less than regular dealers and allow your self a resonable margin?

4 - Be careful about 'carrying' inventory of parts. You do not make money with

inventory. May look good on your balance sheet, but plays H___ with your P & L.

5 - Can you provide a commonly needed service for cyclists to go along with your

"manufacturing" to provide some cash flow and establish yourself as a reliable

parts manufacturer?

6 - Good Luck!

Hi Zidny,

To choose the right parts for manufacturing, make a study of parts of the vehicle which needs frequent replacement. Generally, clutch wire/plates, brake liners, cluth & brake levers etc are the parts which frequently replacement. Its better to catch hold a person of the vehicle manufactures and try to know which parts they commercialized. Generally every manufacturer intentionally design some parts to wear & tear thereby users will be replacing.

Now as far as machines concerned, once you decide the parts to manufacture, I can suggest the machines.

First chose a place which has many industries ,preferably a big city. You should have lots of customers close by.If you are in a small city, check whether all infrastuctures are available. You should have sound knowledge of the part which you are going to make and also experience in that perticular field.Never depend on someone else for technical knowhow. That doesnt mean that you should not consult others. As far as possible make something which is different.

FYI

* Do your research. It is not easy to start a company. You need to find out what is missing in the market, and how you can fill that niche. Here is some suggestions:

* Look at becoming a distributor for small shops that currently exist and are trying to sell their products. Sell their bikes, sell their accessories. See if they will front you the inventory for your showroom, this will remove costs. THis will get you the information you need to go to the next level.

*Go talk to shops that exist and take the owner out to dinner and pick his brain. If you find this hard to get connected, join a Chamber of Commerce and go to meetings to meet local business men who can connect you to the people you need to meet.

* Look at resorting old bike. There is alot of new bikes on the market, and being able to pick up old bikes and doing basic restoration and cleaning can be profitable. People are very nestolgic. Note: Simple things are important like in Michigan, the old cars are rusted. Many car buffs will go to down south to get cars that are not rusted, restore them and bring them upnorth to sell. People love them. Look at markets nationwide and look for patterns.

*Look to buy an existing company. There are many growing pains that come with owning a company. If you can buy a company and obtain workers and knowledge from others, you are that much closer to profit.

*Don't quit your day job. There are no over night success stories. Things take 3-5 times longer that you may hope or expect.

*Be guided by your vision, but make your decisions by profit. Without profit you will starve your company and your family.

*Cashflow is King. Stay out of debt. Pay cash for everything!!!!!!! There are alot of businesses going out of business. Start shopping for tools and equipment. If you have to come to detroit. There are businesses closing every day. If you have cash you can clean up.

*Most businesses do not have a good marketing plan. Many business owners think that if I open, people will come. No Way!!!!You need to look for opportunities to build off of what others have done. IF there is a bike shop that does not repair, become their repair facility, IF there is a bike shop that does not provide custom accessories, talk to the owner of a successful bike company and see if he will rent out space for you to sell accessories....

Don't start from scratch unless you have lots of money. build something small to start to get cash flow then build up. Create short and long term goals. Get more information and do your diligence in research, it will save you.

Get your advisory board set up. Some people with various experiences/expertise. One lawyer, one marketing/sales, one business owner, and a couple of other intelligent people.

Present your business plan to them. Give each of them a box of red pencils to mark up your business plan. Put your ego to the side and carefully review the comments. Revise the business plan, give them the revised copy with new red pencils. Repeat as necessary.

Take business plan to investors as needed (unless independently wealthy) Get money to start business.

Set up shop. Spend 16-20 hours per day to run the business. If business is successful, hire the necessary grunts to do the things you do not like to do.

There is an old joke. "How do you make a small fortune in business? Start with a large fortune!" If you don't have the large fortune, expect to take a lot of time and sweat to get a business started. Maybe 1-2 years before you even set up a shop for the business, than 3-5 years before you make a profit. A lot of small start ups go belly up before 5 years.

Good luck and have fun going for it!

hello,

i can tell you of one start up operation that needs littlel equipment, but can pay big dividends.

here is a true example. a man was a jet ski enthusiast. that meant he had to rebuild his engine constantly. the gasket set for his engine was costing him over $100 each time. several times per month.

he finaly bought a standard vertical hydrolic jack press. made cutters by cutting the shape into plywood, and cutting and installing cutting strips. they are flat on bottom and sides, and very sharp cutting surface on top. width less than 1/8th inch.

he then bought the gasket materials wholesale in rolls. built a roll holding and feeding stand.

started cutting his own gaskets at a cost of about $10 a set.

started selling sets to his friends at $50 each.

stored the plywood sheets in shelves around his garage.

started making gaskets for other engines.

now a millionaire, and still working out of his garage.

only makes gaskets when he gets an order.

no stockpiling except for raw materials.

hope this encourages you. this is a true story.

Your question kind of itreged me, My son is a motorcycle freak. Always going somewhere to ride in ice races. Me and him have descussed the same thing your thinking for years, but maybe from a different perspective. We always winde up at the Plastic parts. I believe they would be the easiest to produce and sometimes the most exspensiveparts on cycles. A vacume form machine and molds. You can make a very nice vacume form machine yourself. And you would have the patterns already form other cycles. I don't know if they are patented probably so . if so you may have to change the design a little. Or create new and cooler looking ones. Fenders battery cover or side covers- etc. In different colours that they dont offer. Fairings with more lights and compartments to put stuff. the line could be endless. molds would be made of wood or plaster. or you could just make the molds and ship them to a vacume form shop for the vacume forming , cutting costs and just selling the product that you design.
