Mathcad Trial Version

11/19/2007 4:33 PM

I have been trying to download the mathcad 30 day free trial to see if its is really worth buying. However windows winzip keeps telling me the zip file has been damaged or truncated and to try to download again. I've downloaded the file twice with the same result. I am using windows xp pro sp2, mozilla firefox as my browser. Has anyone had similar experiences or suggestions?

Can you give us a link to what you've been downloading?

I (for one) will give it a go & report results.

whew, sorry I was interupted earlier, and didn't get a chance to get back here until now. I actually got the link from another thread here at CR4 but what I am using is ptc (Parametric Technology Corporation) who you must register with in order to download so it is kind of a bother. Their download is also slow. Regardless, once at the ptc home page click solutions/downloads then scroll down about 3/4 of the page to mathcad 30 day free trial. Good luck and thanks for the quick response'

Try looking at SciLab, a freeware math software program that is really quite extensive....

History of my attempts:

Went to: Demo, tools & tutorials page

Selected: Visit the Mathcad webstore -

got to: http://store.ptc.com/servlet/ControllerServlet?Action=DisplayHomePage&SiteID=ptc&Locale=en_US&Env=BASE

Selected 'All Products - Mathcad' - arrived here: http://store.ptc.com/store/ptc/DisplayCategoryProductListPage/categoryID.5321800

- where they wanted me to spend $1,950.00

Backed up to the Demo, tools & tutorials page, where there are lots of options. Can you give me more detail of what you were trying to download (a link?), so I can try? I'm doing my best to help, but I need feedback.

Whew! $1,950 glad I am trying to download a free trial! Anyway click ptc this should take you to a google page where the first selection is Product Lifecycle Management(PLM)Software Solutions. Under that heading, click Free Downloads. Scroll About 3/4 down the page and under Mathcad the first choice is Mathcad 30 day free trial download. If you get to the ptc home page in some other manner click on "resources" not "solutions" as I stated in my previous post. Free Downloads appears there. My apologies for the error.

Again,thanks for your help.

Right.

Registered with PTC.

Downloaded Mathcad - file size 217,162 HB - took about 40 minutes (on my "up to 8 meg" BT broadband line, which just about manages 1 meg on a good day!). Used Download Accelerator Plus.

Created C:\Program Files\MathcadDemo, and copied download (EN_14.0_M010.exe) into it.

Clicked on it - got:

Changed "Unzip to folder" to C:\Program Files\MathcadDemo, clicked "Unzip".

All worked fine (took about another 45 minutes to unzip and get it installed & running).

I'm using XP Home SP2. IE7. 40GB free HD, 1GB RAM.

Sorry if this isn't much help, but (apart from the time taken) I had no problem.

thanks johnDG now I at least know it is a problem I have and not the ptc site. I believe the key is the browser,I use firefox and it can be restrictive with downloads sometimes, although I don't know why. I will try again using IE7. By the way what is your opinion of the program? It should walk and talk for $1,950!

Thanks again

Welcome. Hope you get it sorted out.

I haven't got time now to have a proper look at the program, but it's certainly got a hell of a lot of bells & whistles!

What it comes down to is whether you (or the purseholder) can justify the cost. I very rarely need much fancy maths - excel does most of what I need.

All the best,

John

Thinking about it, more-or-less the only time I'd really be tempted to use it would be in an answer to a Challenge Question. But then, if I actually needed it, I'd say it was a bad question. If I didn't really need it, I'd say I was cheating!

Wouldn't mind having it if it was £30 shareware.

I've used MathCAD since it was a DOS program, and I love it. Since PTC bought it, however, the basic version has been discontinued. Mine cost only about $100. I can't see almost $2000 for the use I have. Maybe if enough of us e-mailed PTC to bring it back?

Thanks for mentioning SciLab. I'll check it out.

I'm having the same problem. One difference noted: I'm getting CD_English.zip as the download file (also 218K), whereas one successful install noted above was linked to a self-extracting (exe) file. (I'm running Vista, tried to unzip with both the Vista shell built-in zip functionality and also with Winzip, both failed.)
