Software to Determine Gravity Center?

11/20/2007 12:27 AM

Could anybody suggest me a software able to determine the center of gravity from a shape? Let's say you have a boomerang, you copy its shape, paste it on the workspace and push the "gravity" button. And a little dot or cross will tell you where the center of gravity lies. I though it shouldn't be that difficult but I was unable to find anything on the web. Maybe some of you can help...

Thanks

If it's just a 2 dimensional shape, the old fashioned way will be quicker.

In case you don't know the method.

Cut it out of card, allow it to hang freely from a point, drop a erpendicular from that point (with a plumb line) , mark the line. Repeat from another point, where the teo lines cross is the Cof G. Check with 3rd point.

The shape must be represented mathematically. You should be able to do that in a 3D CAD pakage like SolidWorks or Mastercam.

You can do Del's cardboard trick with the real thing to obtain a 2 dimensional point.

Hang the boomerang (with reference marks) and a plumb line at one end and photograph. Do the same with the other arm up.

The photos can now be superimposed and the point where the plumb lines cross is the centre of gravity. it can be referenced in relation with the reference marks.

The software can be developed after all it is a mathematical calculation !

Any software on the market now can do the trick.

no problem. you can easily get this function. In fact its not a diffult issue for a software. either plane or stereo.

for example, autocad, 3dmax studio, even photoshoop can do the trick. you can use some math sortfware as well.

No luck, so far, with any demo cad. I have photoshop but I didn't find anything relative to the center of gravity. I cannot use anything other then a software because I need to see the shift in the gravity center when I alter the shape: it would require me to build too many models!

I would suggest Autodesk Inventor will do the job. It is easier to use than Autocad for more complex 3d shapes and assemblies.

I agree with the previous posters that a physical test is often the quickest method; we have used the 'Topple' test for complex assemblies that we have been unable to model in cad.

Like everyone else said, ANY 3D Cad software.
