Material for use in an MRI environment

11/19/2007 5:02 PM

I am specifying the material to be used on an MRI coil that is placed in the magnet. The material must have a low proton signal so it will not show up or impair the main image. Does anyone have any suggestions on the proper material; for simple machined, urethane cast and injection molded parts.

I have tried various materials with limited success with respect to the 'ghosting image" that results from a less than optimum material.

Any help or guidance will be appreciated.

First relevant thing google came up with was "... a suitable non-magnetic, MRI transparent material such as a thermoplastic polymer of methyl methacrylate (e.g. , Plexiglas)"

I searched for 'mri transparent' (no quotes).

Best I can suggest.

Thanks, JohnDG!

I have been googling several variations of your suggestion. The MM material suggested looks promising...I'm still searching...

If your type of material is not set yet...

We have had some good results with aluminium and even better result with titanium. Our automation equipment inside the MRI machine is practically "ghost free".

fused silica or fused quartz would be perfect. Hard to machine and not cheap, but invisible.
