Texas Nuclear has a dual nuclear source, handheld device that can be held against any metal and it will identify the material by name if it's an exact match. If it's not an exact match it will list all the components by %. They work great for receiving dept, PMI , required little training, are easily licensed but even a used one cost around $50,000.

by all means, the best option, could be setting up a permanent lab in your infrastructure, which will help you in more than one ways in future too, and deput a lab incharge. Most definitely the cost would be quiet lower than the hand held device suggested. Secondly, you can educate yourself, to commence the basic test in your own lab for identifying 304 to 316.

There are many options for hand held PMI testing while using X-ray Floresence. It's fast and pretty accurate to determine if it's Type 304 or 316. Unfortunatly XRF cannot detect Carbon content to distinguish 304 from 304L and likewise 316 from 316L.

You may want to look into plasma arc spectrography. Spectro makes a decent unit. Google "Spectrotest" and you will have a wealth of knowledge at your disposal.

The one of differences between 316 and 304 is Mo 2% in 316.

You can use Modybdenum chemical detector for your purpose.

If It is 316SS, then it will be discolored after using tester.

The portable testers can tell you only a limmited chemistry value.

most can not detect elements of carbon and less or 14 and less. this includes silicon

the diff between 316 316 l is the low carbon value.

so the machines will not tell you if you have l series or not. buyer beware of what the machines can do?

for difference between 304 and 316 with the help of moly detector are cheap and fast method.
