Flyback Converters...

11/21/2007 5:38 AM

Can anyone tell me are flyback and matrix converters are high power converters ?

if so then can anyone let me undrestand how they works ? and from where could i find their Schematic Diagrams and working of these converters ?

awaiting for reply

indel,

Let me see if I can translate the question... I want to play with really high-voltage! I'm talking hundreds of thousands or better millions of volts like this guy:

However, I'm discovering that just having a bigger transformer doesn't really mean you're going to get results like this! I've heard a little bit about building up a really big charge, and then letting it collapse over-and-over, and I think there was something in there about fly-back circuits.

Can you help me to figure out how to make this type of really cool, lethal stuff?

Vermin,

I have seen a magician doing the trick with megavolt discharges. I really don't know how to get there. I have buit a hv dc power supply for oil exploration purposes. I haven't used a flyback, I uded a resonance system. All I can tell you that designing the transformer is not a simple task.

To use a flyback, like - for example - the one used in TV sets (some 15KV for BW and 25KV for color), You need to chop the current in the primary, i.e. to let current pass through windings and suddenly to interrupt the circuit. In theoretical situations (no wire resistance, no capacitive behavior of the windings, and a very fast interruption of a large current, you will get a huge voltage swing. You may "collect" this one or, its multiplied value on a secondary winding of this flyback system. I assume that, having the right materials, you can reproduce a large scale flyback configuration. You could drive the primary from an, already, high voltage. To exemplify, to build a 100KV from a 12V is not an easy task. To build it from 200V is much easier. Anyway, you need a very good friend knowledgeable in very high voltages. And do not even think to get a policy for life insurance. They accept a maximum risk of 99.9%

You're gunna love this one...

Put 6V DC on the red & White wires, and you get 100,000V out the other end! Jumps about a six or seven inch spark!!!

Hi,

Where can one purchase the compact high voltage module as pictured?

Thanks,

Bill

Thanks for the info. It looks like something used for an electrostatic paint sprayer; probably has a DC output.

Would you like a chart that shows where flyback converter designs typically top out and you switch to another topology?

That would be great!

Also, just finding the complete plans for a really big Tesla coil would be great, too.

Attached is a generalized graph that shows where flybacks are traditionally used in terms of voltage and power level. They are typically not used above 100 watts for the simple reason that they will take up more space than the alternative topologies and some of the parasitics get very difficult to control effectively. This is not to say that you can't use them there, but chances are there may be better alternatives.

High Power....hmmmmmm. That could mean a lot of things, especially with the diverse backgrounds you see in this forum.

My experience lies in the sub 2KVA transformers for commercial applications. I could recommend several, but most of them are in the sub 1KVA size range. For this I would recommend any books by Colonel McLyman, Nathan Grossner, or Flanagen.

McLyman used to work for JPL (Jet Propulsion Labs) and if you want to build a bullet proof / aerospace grade transformer , his approach will work well. You can peruse his wares as www.kgmagnetics.com

Grossner was a TRW guru and also has a lot to offer that is more diverse, but maybe less detailed than what you are looking for (and his book is out of print).
