star delta motor link plates connection

11/21/2007 12:03 PM

Hi..

i was trying to connect a newly installed motor with star-delta connections. The motor is shipped with the terminal with link plates inside.. I'm using a auto star-delta switchover contacts; should I remove the link plates connectors at the motor terminal??

I'm always confuse and forget abt how does star/delta wiring looks like...should there altogether be 6 wires + 1 neutral?? should the nos. of wires depend on the nos. of poles of the motor??

Thanks..

Hello Lucky,

Those three little plates are so you can install the motor in either star or delta. When the plates look like the legs of an 'E', the motor is in star, and when all on one side, delta. So if you have an auto change over, you will need to remove the plates and take the 6 poles back to the auto change over! If you leave the plates in, I think cables may start to heat up very quickly!

Generally, 3θ motors don't use a neutral but there are circumstances! If you are at all unsure, get a sparkie to check it out first, or do it for you! (That's my disclaimer!)

With type of information furnished by you, I feel that you do not have much experience on motors and motor starting.Star delta starters are tricky and if you do not have confidence about the circuitary ,please take the help of qualified electrician to do the job.

The motor will have 6 terminals u,v,w and u1,v1 and w1.

For the motor to run on star formation u1,v1 and w1 will be shorted and this will form the neutral point. There will be 4 wires connecting the starter and the motor.

To operate the motor in delta formation 6 wires will be connected from the starter , there will not be any shorting and no neutral will be connected to the motor.

Thank you ramvinod, I stand totally corrected, All on the one side is star, not delta as I said! (I am in the corner with a big Dunce hat on my head at this exact moment, murmuring shame on me, shame on me!)

Best Advice get an electrician

Both previous comments are wrong only slightly but enough to cause an expensive bang.

As you say you want to connect star/delta. You must remove all the link plates and throw them away. six phase wires and an earth are required from the motor to the starter do not run a neutral. Your terminals will be U1-U2 V1-V2-W1-W2 I am not going to explain how to hook up the starter etc or the difference between star and delta connections. if you are unsure get an electrician or be prepared for the big bang

go to http://www.johnson-pump.com/Horticulture/quickstart-motor.htm

and then you have to identify the 3 coil i.e the 6 ends and connect them as shown at drawings. separate (make two groups) the ends as shown at sketch

Connect them such the voltage at the same coil is not at the same phase. This to avoid two phase running of the motor =======> motor burns

If you cant to the above PLEASE CALL AN ELECTRICIAN

BE AWARE THAT VOLTS ABOVE 50V CAN KILL PEOPLES
