Crouse Hinds ALS System and Siemens ALS System

11/26/2007 7:22 AM

An existing Crouse Hinds ALS system with flashing lights approximately 20 years old has to be replaced with a new Siemens ALS system. The problem I have is that this installation is for an air force runway and I cannot turn the system completely off. I only can take down one light at the time and flashing lights still must work. I don't know how to get these two different systems working with each other. Did anybody has any experience on this? Thank you!!!

About the only way to do this is to deploy the new system, get it working and then retire the old system. 5kv ALS system are not to be trifled with!!

These two systems are compatible? These lights must be wired in parallel? If you can't work them "off", you work them "hot". Tie in the new, take out the old. Before anyone complains, yes, there will be times you work "hot".

Good luck,

James

How much of the system is being replaced? Just the threshold lights or all of it? What about the regulator, is it being changed as well?

How you proceed depends on your scope. But... if possible, deploy the new system and retire the old one. Its the only way the job will be done safely and ensure the availability of the airstrip lighting system.

All you need to have happen is have the system down for any reason (a connection of a new transformer on to the series circuit perhaps) and have an aircraft in distress. Think on the liability!

Yes... we all work "hot" by times... but only a fool works "hot" when there are alternatives to doing so.
