Guest,

There isn't one answer to your question...

It really depends upon the way your 480 V is wired (3 or 4), as well as the specifics of the motor and its application (e.g., Delta or WYE connection, constant or variable torque, single or dual voltage).

Are there any clues to the hookup on the motor's nameplate?

You should open the peckerhead up, and see if you can trace which leads are "wire-nutted" together inside.

I'm slightly more familiar with NEMA; however in your instance:

IEC Nomenclature--6 (& 12) Leads:

Single Voltage WYE-Delta Connections

Mode - - - Conn. - - - L1 - - - L2 - - - L3 - - - Join

Start - - - WYE - - - U1 - - - V1 - - - W1 - - - U2&V2&W2

Run - - - Delta - - - U1,W2 - - - V1,U2 - - - W1,V2 - - - -------

Dual Voltage WYE-Delta Connections

Volt - - - Conn. - - - L1 - - - L2 - - - L3 - - - Join

High - - - WYE - - - U 1 - - - V1 - - - W1 - - - U2&V2&W2

Low - - - Delta - - - U1,W2 - - - V1,U2 - - - W1,V2 - - - -------

Constant Torque Connection

Speed - - - L1 - - - L2 - - - L3 - - - - - - - - -- - -- - -- - -Conn.

High - - - 2W - - - 2U - - - 2V - - - 1U&1V&1W--JOIN - - - 2 WYE

Low - - - 1U - - - 1V - - - 1W - - - 2U-2V-2W OPEN - - - 1 Delta

Variable Torque Connection

Speed - - - L1 - - - L2 - - - L3 - - - - - -- - -- - -- - -- - -Conn.
High - - - 2W - - - 2U - - - 2V - - - 1U&1V&1W--JOIN - - - 2 WYE

Low - - - 1U - - - 1V - - - 1W - - - 2U-2V-2W OPEN - - - 1 WYE

In closing, I'm NOT an electrician, so proceed at your own risk…

Your motor should have a wiring nameplate showing you connection diagrams. I suggest you use that instead of asking out of the blue. Wiring motors is not a standard.

Hi Guest,

These letters are the 'new' DIN 42401 standard. The windings are U1-U2,V1-V2,and W1-W2

Just check that there is continuity U1-U2, V1-V2, W1-W2,and that there is no continuity between U1-V1, U1-W1, V1-W1.If there is any discrepancy stop, you've got an oddball.

For star connection which is probably the one for 480V join U2-V2-W2 together and connect the power wires to U1,V1,W1.

Most motors are wound for dual voltage in Europe around 240/400v,the 400v connection being as above and the 240v connection is W2-U1, U2-V1, V2-W1 which is the delta connection, power wires going to the joined windings,i.e. to W2-U1 junction,U2-V1 junction,V2-W1 junction.

Its very unusual to find small motors connected in other than star for the voltage you have.

Is contacting the manufacturer out of the question for some reason?
