Catepillar 773E Dump Truck Transmission Problem

02/27/2006 4:03 PM

Akintunde Akinrogunde writes:
Very recently, one of the equipment that is under my jurisdiction developed an usual problem with the machine movement. The dump truck, 773e model, could not move beyond first speed forward except on slope/downgrade. I have made all machine codes inactive with the electronic technician and based experience. Equally, all inputs to the transmission ecm were confirmed okay. All pressures, particularly, input/output to torque converter were confirmed. The locked up solenoid activated as expected, but the shift to next speed did not take place. The body up/down switch was equally confirmed normal as by-pass was considered and experienced. Because of the problem nature and particularly the first set up of equipment model, I decided to throw this problem open to colleagues, particularly those with OEM, To brainstorm and possibly come out with locally available solutions. Once again, the nature of the problem is unique as the machine could not go beyond 1st speed. Thank you and happy moment.

locked up Transmission

Are the synchro rings frozen to the shaft somehow preventing the gear from moving forward and shifting. I have seen that before with smaller trannys. Use of wrong or contaminated fliuds caused it to rust to the shaft. Good luck

Make sure that any mechanical linkages on the transmission are operating freely and smoothly. I've seen other applications where the throttle input and gear input linkage were concentric and made of similar materials. Long story short, after a few Central New York winters, they rusted together. If that doesn't help, change the fluid and filter and possibly adjust the bands (if a large vehicle trans. like that even has bands) Good luck

tranny shift

You mave have contamination in the valve body. pressures will read ok at sensors/valves but the reduced flow will affect the shifting time relative to pressure. I'm guessing there is less flow needed to shift on a down slope so works there ok..

Try manually downshifting on a grade. The resulting pressure/flow surge can dislodge debris obstructing the valve body.

Once I had similar problems with an Alison transmission in a truck of similar size (Euclid) the valve test unit would bring odd results, the pressures didn't make sense and all soleniods were reading ok. When the valve body was removed and stripped, the spools were blocked by broken up friction materials. None had shown in the strainer and the valve teardown was a desperation measure.
