Air Architecture

02/23/2006 11:33 AM

Welcome to a "sneak peek" article from the March edition of the Pneumatics Now newsletter from GlobalSpec.

"Airtecture" pneumatic construction is based on a series of air-inflated load-bearing components, as opposed to conventional air-supported buildings which are shaped and held up by positive pressure. The world's first building assembled with Airtecture components resides near Stuttgart, Germany, on the grounds of Festo AG & Co. KG. Animations and photo galleries on Festo's Web site explain the Airtecture concept and give a step-by-step overview of the pneumatic building's construction.

Air suspension

It could be a way to reduce siesmic damage provided there were redundant envelopes and the building wasn't oversquare. But wind load could be a problem. A series of tethered counterwieghts may alieviate that problem, but a reliable air supply would be necessary. How about carbon fiber reinforced mylar, with self sealing bladders? Hmmmmm?
