Autotransformer starting refers to the use of non-isolated single winding transformers in motor starter circuits to reduce the motor terminal voltage temporarily during starting as a way to reduce the starting current surge that happens when you first energize an AC induction motor.

"Slip ring" has nothing to do with starters, that has to do with motors. Slip ring motors can be either Wound Rotor Induction Motors (WRIM), or Synchronous motors. Either type will always need a starter.
