Paint for Galvanized Metal to Stop Rust?

11/27/2007 9:30 AM

Galvanized Metal--My chimney roof cap is 22 yrs old and it is rusting. The rust is bleeding on my cedar. The metal appears to be in good condition/solid other than rust. What can I paint on the galvanized to stop the rusting? I would like an "off-the-shelf product"--if possible

I have painted rusty galvanized roofing with an asphalt-based, aluminum paint and that works well, but doesn't necessarily look so great. If appearance is important, you could start by looking at Rustoleum's cold galvanizing paint. You may need to do a surface prep.

Here's another vote for a cold-galvanising finish.

I've used some stuff called "Extend" which I purchased from an auto parts store. It's a brownish liquid that can be brushed on and turns black. It claims to be a conversion coating that seals and halts further rusting. It can either be used as the final finish or as a primer for paint. Seems to work OK.

I've also used some of the oil-based Rustoleum products.

The "Happy handyman" in our local paper swears by this:

Apply it, wait a week, clean off the excess.

If you want a quick and relatively cheap solution, you can't go much wrong with good old Hammerite.

I assume you are talking about the flashing at the base of the chimney onto the cedar shingles, we have cold galvanising products here in Australia, "Roval" & "Galmet", wire bush the surface really clean & paint on, really thick heavy stuff, must mix & stir really well before applying, is a dark to light grey color finish. I made up a removable swimming pool ladder for the above-ground pool we had, welded the galvanised pipe rungs to the side rails also galvanised pipe , wire brushed the weld joints clean & painted the joints with "Roval", the welded joints were submerged on & off in the chlorinated water for years & they never rusted !!! Good stuff !!

hello Beulah,

1st step is to remove the rust using a small spot sandblast (you can rent these) you will prepare the surface to receive the primer.

2nd apply a 2 component primer-sealer called Rustbond at 1-2 mils DFT, let dry over night and then you paint with 2 coat of epoxy mastic like Carbomastic 15, DFT= 8-10 mils. this should be apply by spraygun that you can rent also for aesthetic purpose

If you want color you apply a 2k urethane DFT= 3-5 mils over the previous preparation also by spraygun. Coventionnal spraygun will do the job, friendly user paint

it will last another 25 years miminum: these product are industrial paints but available to the end user... at least in Canada and are off-the-shelf paints...

If in U.S. (don't know much about international availability) try Sherwin-Williams' Sprayon line of welding supplies, part no. S00740, zinc-rich cold galvanizing compound (cold-gal), CRC's part no. 18412 Zinc-It, or Rustoleum/Krylon similar product (don't have the part no. at hand). These should be available at most any hardware, farm supply, or home improvement store (Ace, Tru-Value, Tractor Supply, Lowe's, Home Depot, etc.). There are also products that chemically alter iron oxide (rust) to make it viable metal that should be found on the same shelf.

Pretty much what most everyone has said. Prep the surface and use Cold Galvanizing. It is a primer and is a dull dark gray in color.

To beautify the appearance. After using the Cold Galvanizing you can paint over it with Silver paint. Silver blends in a new galvanized sheet metal pretty good you really can't tell the difference unless you look closely. We call it Okie Chrome.

We use Cold Galvanizing all the time to keep the integrity of the galvanized material after any welding or if someone has done any grinding or sanding with a flap wheel on galvanized sheet metal. Silver paint covers it quite well. Much of our galvanized sheet metal work involves tanks.

I believe that Rustoleum has an appropriate product for this application.

He can use Rustoleum but I don't think Rustoleum holds up very well.

Rustoleum™ makes a cold galvanizing aerosol spray. I have used it several times on my chimney cap.
