welding Titanium to Al. Bronze

How to join 3.00 mm thick tube made of Titanium (P51 gr. II - UNS SB 338) to Al bronze ( P-35 - SB171 UNS 6300) sheet of 4 thk. Can it be brazed or welded using TIG process? If so, what is the filler metal / flux and precautions to be taken. Thanks.

Hi,

I would try brazing immediately after fine sandblasting or sandpaper grinding or else of the surface.

TIG likely to be ok.

Braze to try: silver copper (indium) titanium.

Silver-copper near eutectik for low temperature, indium for easy flow, titanium (3-5%) for on site oxide removal.

I switched to vacuum brazing in very difficult (carbide to diamond) brazings.

Al bronze is pretty difficult, titanium even more.

Try it and report please.

Since one of the parts is cylindrical I think this can be done by friction welding. The idea is that the part is brought up to speed attached to a flywheel. then they are pushed together and the friction heats the metal and slows the flywheel. The energy in the flywheel is set to be just enough to make the weld. the flywheel grinds (welds?) to a halt and the welded part is removed. I can remember the name of the company that showed us some demo parts, But they were a roller manufacturer, I think in ROC, but possible Taiwan or ROK. I know it wasn't japan or vietnam.

but there are others. Do a search on friction welding. But I was totally gobsmacked that they could do Al/Ti welds or Al/stainless
