The prime function is safety. These isolators usually have a means of locking them in the OFF position, so that the load (motor + attached moving parts, heater etc.) can be serviced without the presence of electrical, mechanical or thermal hazards.

(I'm assuming you're talking about a switch disconnector type isolator).
