Darwin or the Devil?

Regarding your question of how Darwin's ideas would have been received if had been an American: I recently discovered that there WAS an American author, James Stanley Grimes, who published a full-blown theory of evolution by natural selection in 1850. (I am currently preparing an article on the subject for publication.) So far as I can tell, Grimes received a far more hostile and dismissive reaction from his fellow Americans than Darwin did from his fellow Englishmen; the greatest American naturalist of the time, Louis Aggasiz, advised Grimes to suppress the book. (Agassiz would later become Darwin's greatest opponent in the United States). What all of this suggests is that Darwin's thoery would NOT have received a more generous reception if he had been an American; possibly it would have been received with even greater hostility. I just thought I would mention this, since I saw the topic brought up here.
