Blackstar: Top Secret Space Shuttle?

03/06/2006 12:10 PM

Aviation Week is running a story about the supposed top secret two stage to orbit system operated by the Air Force, known as Blackstar, or the "Black Shuttle Program."

AWAST is hinting that the program may have been closed down, but that it was probably operational in the recent past. Supposedly, the system was built on technology from the XB-70 (now that was a cool plane) and Dynasoar programs.

What do you think? Did/does "Blackstar" exist? Has the Air Force been in space for 20 years with their Black Shuttle?

Yes

Blackstar probably exists, but remains in its infancy. I have a hard believing that it's been in space for 20 years. After all, President Bush's decision to wage war in Iraq was based largely on human intelligence from the likes of characters such as "Curveball".

I hope we have one

Gee, I kind of feel better knowing that, in a pinch, our government can do something in space. This isn't quite "Armageddon"-style (or West Wing) military shuttles or anything, so it may be too early to drop Gunny (of Mail Call) a line.

With this project dead we've either got nothing, or we have whatever black project replaced it.

Truth?

Well, there is probably some measure of truth to the story (I only glanced at it), but the problem with these things is that we only get bits and peices of the puzzle and it is third and fourth hand. You can't be sure if the data you get is information or disinformation. The military has been known to purposely plant disinformation in the past to keep people guessing. In 50 years we may know more.

For anyone that passes by Dayton Ohio, the Wright-Patterson Air Force Museum has one of the few XB-70's as a static display (among other aircraft). Unfortunately, the base keeps the alians and their spacecraft well hidden.
