12/03/2007 12:09 PM

Hi, im mechanical student who is now doing a research about rapid prototyping. I faced difficulties in finding ASTM(AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR TESTING AND MATERIAL) Standard. So, i need your help if you know where to find that standard. Does this standard exists? Thank you very much for your help.....

So, you're looking to see if an ASTM exists for the rapid prototyping category?

Typically, you'd have to get a subscription to obtain ASTM standards. Perhaps your engineering department has one. I've been in RP for years but never had that question come up. I'd suggest contacting 3D Systems, EOS, or Stratasys as they're the manufactureres of the machines for that process. Perhaps they can shed additional light on that question.

Your having trouble because there is no such standard.

Protyping is done with all kinds of different materials and methods.

You should find standards on Rapid Prototyping by visiting http://www.astm.org. Use the Site Search and type in Rapid Prototyping. You should see some hits related to this subject. You do not need a subscription to purchase ASTM standards. They range in price from $25+ dollars, but if you have a professor that uses ASTM standards in the classroom he/she may have a subscription that you can use (in which case the download of the standard might be free).

Good luck!

The first three materials that come up at ASTM for rapid prototyping all refer to the software methodology, not technologies that produce physical models.

She, if it is a specific test you are looking to perform, is it more appropriate to try to find an ASTM specification documenting the test procedure and sample preparation?
