Hydrogen Gas in the Kitchen

04/24/2021 8:46 PM

Can you burn hydrogen instead of natural gas on a kitchen stove?

Yes it could be rejetted and setup to use pure hydrogen...gas appliances can run on propane or natural gas by just installing the right jets...the propane jets are smaller because it contains more btu's...

Hydrogen jets would probably need to be much larger....and the piping would probably need to be changed as hydrogen is well known for causing iron and steel to become brittle...also hydrogen is about 3 to 6 times the cost of natural gas, depending on production method used...

...."This means that if natural gas costs $6/million BTU, then hydrogen will be $18/million BTU. Also, producing hydrogen from electrolysis with electricity at 5 cents/kWh will cost $28/million BTU — slightly less than two times the cost of hydrogen from natural gas."...

..."Propane has a gas density of about 2 kg per cubic meter (2,01). Hydrogen on the other hand only has a gas density of 0,0899 kg / m³. So compared to 1m³ of propane you can only store as much as 4,49% of H2 molecules in the same space and under the same pressure as you can with propane. This boils down to a much lesser energy density, meaning that you have to burn a much bigger volume of H2 for the same amount of energy."...

So you could, but it would be prohibitively expensive..

It may be possible to manufacture hydrogen through dissociation from water with a nuclear reactor, and drop the price considerably, but that is far in the future....

Hydrogen has a number of characteristics different from normal fuel. It has low ignition energy and a wider fuel-to-air ratio that supports combustion. It is more prone to leakage due to its small molecular size and leaks are difficult to detect. Odorants are added to natural gas to aid in detection, but there are no known odorants that travel with, i.e., have similar diffusion rates as hydrogen. In addition, a hydrogen flame emits mostly in the ultraviolet, so that it is less likely to be detected visually or by emitted infrared radiation.

I think it's likely that hydrogen would be mixed with nat gas in perhaps a 50/50 ratio to be practical....

An experiment at Keele University in the UK has demonstrated that hydrogen can be successfully blended into natural gas in a ratio of 20% H to 80% NG and used in domestic appliances on a private gas network. Phase II of the experiment (which should have already been underway but is delayed by Covid) is to demonstrate it's use in the north east UK using the public gas network. For more details look up "HyDeploy". The ultimate objective is to reduce CO2 emissions by 6 million tonnes per year by extending hydrogen/natural gas blending to the whole UK gas network.

Blending of hydrogen in higher proportions creates problems of steel brittling in those parts of the gas distribution network that have not been converted from steel pipe to plastic pipe.

This will at least double your gas bill probably...of course you get it free at first...haha

Yes but be aware that hydrogen burns without a visible flame and only shows when dust or other items enter the flame.

I used to do a lot of Aluminium welding with Oxy-Hydrogen flames in a normal gas torch and it was very hard to see the flame to get the hottest part of the flame onto the metal. Did a lot of welding Aluminium lugs to Aluminium cores.

So I assume setting the right flame height on a gas burner may be a skill needing to be learnt.

One can burn anything one has to hand, however the equipment, the fuel, its temperature and pressure are primary considerations for safety.

If in doubt on hydrogen, consult a qualified Gas Installer.

You could,but why would you?

Hydrogen is presently very expensive fuel, even when used in a fusion reaction.

The sun is such a natural reactor, but humans produce more energy,pound-per-pound than the sun does.
