Expandable Material for Sealing / Gasket

12/05/2007 11:12 AM

I am looking for a sleeve or tape that can be placed on a cable that goes through a plain hole in a steel cylinder. After inserting it we want to make it expand to seal between the cable (approx 9mm od) and the hole (apprx. 10.5mm id) to make a air tight/moisture tight seal. Not really a strain relief or bushing...just seal out moisture, maybe some drops of water. There is also a 1.5mm stranded wire cable that comes out parallel to the rubber jacketed cable.

Is there any material out there like that. Any links would be appreciated.

Best Regards.

Well,

There are plenty of sealing options that may be applied. Rubber O-rings or even a plain rubbed seal such as made by Chicago Rawhide.

Why not try gromets, these are manufactured in various sizes and can be natural rubber or nitrile rubber and possibly many other materials. They do work very well and they may solve your problem.

You could probably use most marine sealants - 3M 5200 is good. Just check that whatever you use will stick to the cable insulation.

Alternatively, you might be able to wrap the cable with a sealing tape, like the stuff used for quick repairs on cars. You could wrap it so that it forms a cone you can pull firmly into the hole.

Hi Butcher, at the risk of being rude, I would like to ask about this obsession with fixing everything with sealants and tape. I was taught, that in the main, things like tape and sealants, are used for emergency or stop gap measures. e.g. when a gasket is required, a gasket is cut, one does not use sikaflex or silicon, etc.Sometimes these sealants can cause some very expensive damage, particularly when this crap is squeezed into a fuel or coolant system of a diesel engine. If gaskets leak there is a problem.........find it and fix it.

You can purchase a liquid tight seal for cable from any electrical supply shop.

Make the hole bigger and install the liquid tight fitting (it come with a gasket to seal the fitting to the box/ enclosure).

Then pass the cable through the fitting and tighten the nut which compresses a rubber ring onto the cable and the ID of the fitting creating a liquid tight seal.

This is a current product and this is a cost cutting measure.

The hole is not threaded and we do not want to change it.

We currently fill the gap with epoxy. The hole is deep. maybe 2 inches. We just want something simple and we want to get away from adhesives if possible.

A dry solution is what we seek, although the tape installed in a conical shape sounds cheap and easy enough.

One of the options we are looking at is a tapered stopper from the inside.

Thanks all for the very good input.

You should be able to get a natural or nitrile rubber seal manufactured for the job. Maybe something like this, a flanged seal each end with hole to suit
