Is Vista Really a Pig?

12/06/2007 7:47 AM

I've now got two laptops from the factory running Vista as the OS. I have to say I haven't noticed any great advantage with Vista. I have noticed several disadvantages: first, it takes forever to boot and load apps. Second, my older version of LabVIEW doesn't support 64 bit drivers and when I tried to load the developer tools on the one PC I crashed the machine drivers completely and had to burn the HDD back to factory setpoints. So I think the backwards compatibility of Vista is lacking as well.

Finally, Vista is a memory hog. I've got 4GB of memory on the one PC and it's 1/3 loaded just getting the machine booted. Which is probably why it takes so long to boot....

I called tech support and was told that the manufacturer does not recommend regressing to XP. My coworkers and I think this is "bad advice."

I would like to get some other opinions before I try this process. Thoughts? Has anybody taken a Vista machine and regressed to XP?

Nope... A pig is useful!

Yep, at least a pig can result in a good ham sandwich. By comparison, my experience with Vista is that it is the ultimate in bloatware. I have sworn off it and am in the process of switching over to Linux Mandriva. From what I've seen, Linux is much faster in all respects.

I had the same (and a few other problems) with Vista and decided to regress to XP. However, that only made matters worse, because the XP didn't install correctly coming from Vista. Called tech support which was useless and am now just dealing with Vista. The bugs of this operating system really need to get worked out, but at least my experience is that it is not good to go back to XP...you'll end up just going back to Vista in the end.

I have done it... Step by Step...

First installed Multiboot to be able to boot either with Vista or XP.

After few monthes, not using Vista at all anymore, i just throw vista out.

If you need advices on how to do it, just mail me:

XP was doing great for me. Vista is stuck with several things that I find worse than XP. However, I can't find any mentionable-worthy things better about Vista than XP.

Not only it's a memory hog, it's also a very crude attempt to clone OSX, and cloning software is an art very few can master.

Is this why it seems like an immature OS? Yes indeed.

Don't be afraid to stand down to XP (or even Win 2000) if you so choose. The OS may not be backwards compatible, but the hardware makers are much more tolerant in this respect.

Just make sure, that if you choose XP, it's the second version (with built-in SP-II), to take advantage of Hard Disk volumes bigger than 132 Gb.

All this, and we haven't even mentioned Linux...

Soon enough, (as rumored) Mac OS will be available for Intel and AMD motherboards, which will probably force Microsoft, to become more serious about the integrity and reliability of their products. They have been using their monopoly to toy with us, for much too long, I say.

What class of boat are you sailing?

Out of what club are you sailing?

If you sailed in college, where did attend?
