Is There Any Chip that can Replace 74HC259?

07/16/2021 2:24 AM

Hey guys, I want to ask a question. My 74HC259 has something wrong.

Is there any chip that can replace 74HC259?it is best to be in high impedance state when it is not strobed.

Thanks in advance

There seems to be a list here of possible alternatives....what is your main issue with this chip?

..."Generally you need to consider several things when replacing one technology with another. Firstly the setup times and write times are normally much longer in 4000 series CMOS. The 74HC series is quicker so you probably could make the substitution (if pin equivalent), but you do need to make sure the timing is OK. Driving 4000 series from any TTL output normally requires a pull up resistor to ensure logic high level compatibility (provided they are both run from 5V) unless the 4000 series device has Schmitt trigger inputs (which the 4099 does not). Drive levels of the 4000 series into TTL can prove problematic. You need to investigate the output drive capability of the CMOS part. The 4000 CMOS series can operate with a supply voltage from 3V to 15V. This can be advantageous in some circumstances, but obviously interfacing with 5V systems would need extra attention."...

When you say it has something wrong: do you mean it is faulty? Or do you mean that you really need slightly different functionality?

When you say it really needs to be high impedance when not strobed: is that the slightly different functionality you want? Could you just add a tri-state buffer after the addressable latch, for example a 74HC241?

A click here and a click there and presto!

CY74FCT2573T from Texas Instruments is an 8-bit latch (same as the 74HC259) but with tri-state outputs. Unfortunately, you'll need to modify your circuit because the TI unit is a 20-pin device while the 259 is a 16-pin device.

Or you can use the 74F373 which is an 8-bit latch with tri-state outputs.

Unfortunately the 259 is an addressable latch

The 2573 is a "straight through" 8 bit latch

Also, the "FCT" is a TTL compatible technology. He is better sticking with "HC" for compatibility with the other components and power supply.

Randall,

Thanks for the correction. I had latched on to the word "latch" and missed the fact that it was also a 1 of 8 decoder. My bad. Should've checked the function more closely.

regards,

Vulcan
