Casing extraction during bored piling works.

12/06/2007 7:10 PM

During the extraction of temprorary casing (1.2m diameter and more) using the vibro hammer, does the contractor:-

a) extract the casing all the way out of the ground, and then, with the casing still clamped to the vibro, lower the casing and place it horizontally onto the ground; or

b) extract the casing till it is 'loose' from the earth, and with it still free-standing, unclamp the vibro from the casing, use the crane to lift the casing out of the hole using wire rope, and finally lower the casing to be placed horizontally on the ground?

I have done this procedure many times. Both ways have their ups and downs. If the casing is deep and must be cut out in joints, you must lay the vibrator down first. Even if it's not, laying the vibrator down with the casing can damage the vibro or the casing, making it unusable. Also, disconect on the ground is a pain. The only time I lay them down together is if the hole is so unstable that time becomes an element. I'd rather get the pile in the hole and worry about the vibro later than have to re-drill.

Hope this helps.

If it was necessary to use a vibrohammer to install the casing, It may still be necessary to use it to remove after the placement of sufficient amount of concrete to seal the offending part of the excavation.

In extremely sandy/wet areas we have gone to the point of requiring separate lifting devices(cranes) for the hammer and the casing. This method came into play when we lost a casing while trying to set down as a unit.
