In the aftermath of spending loads of money on Covid all UK government departments have been asked to make savings where possible.

A spokesperson for the London Transport Authority later commented that, in their effort to raise cash, selling the bridge's manual winding handle for scrap "lacked foresight".

That's got to be a lot of work cranking that thing up by hand! Maybe the guy that had to crank it was the one who made the decision to sell the manual winding handle!

If the hand crank mechanicals wee left in place, the "manual part" could be easily replaced with a gear motor,or heavy duty drill or pipe threading machine coupled to the manual input shaft.

If however the jam is mechanical in nature:a broken gear, shaft,or linkage, couplings, etc.that presents an entirely different set of problems that will require more time.

A lack of proper preventative maintenance in usually the root cause of such failures.

A mission-critical operation should not be "economized" without a careful failure-potential analysis.

Of course, this may ultimately be blamed on Covid for causing a shortage of qualified technicians.
